By the time Barbara has finished cutting back this poor hosta you’d think it was defunct! But not so. Next year it will be back to beautify the garden once again. Watch the video and you’ll see you don’t have to be timid when cutting back your hosta or other perennials!

Thanks for the video on cutting back hostas for the winter. I cut mine back last week and found large slugs snuggled deep down in the hostas . I got rid of them pretty quickly and am happy there will be a few less slugs next spring when the new growth comes up!

So helpful! Thank you! We had quite a cold snap here in Missouri a couple of weeks ago that really zapped our hostas. Their leaves lost their color and really just shriveled up. Do I proceed just the same? We just planted them this summer, so they’re young. So glad to have found this website!

Yes, Kristi,
Just cut them right back if they are still pretty small. When the plants are older and they are well rooted, after several days of hard frost, you may just be able to give the leaves a firm tug and they’ll come off right at the base. But until then, it’s best just to cut them back.
Thanks for your email!
Barbara
