Plant of the Week - Athyrium ‘Ghost’

June 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

One of the great challenges for any gardener is learning how to garden in the shade.  However, once you discover what works in your shade garden - you are away to the races.  This patch of garden is under an enormous Eastern White Pine - basically we’re talking VERY dry shade.  I know the literature often says, Athyrium need moist soil. However, A. ‘Ghost’ is one of those ferns that handles the dry shade beautifully.

It has lovely blue/green foliage and stands out in the sea of green of hosta and other shade lovers.  It grows about 40cm high and wide (14-18″) and keeps its colour throughout the growing season.

I cut back the ugly dead fronds in the spring and then just let it do its thing.  While it is supposed to spread by runners; mine seems to be quite happy just staying where it is.

So, if you’re looking for a stunning fern that handles dry shade and still looks fabulous - be sure to find a spot for Athyrium ‘Ghost’ in your garden!
