Plant of the Week: Clematis tangutica

August 14th, 2008 · No Comments

Clematis tangutica is a beautiful climbing vine that blooms from mid to late summer.  While the waxy yellow bell-like flowers are small (3cm-1.25″) - they cover the vine.   The flowers are produced on the current year’s growth, so any pruning must be done early in the spring before it starts to grow.  Clematis tangutica climbs by twining.  It is a terrific vine to cover a fence, as it can grow 5-6 (15-20 feet) meters high and 2-3 (6-10 feet) meters wide.  Adaptable to both sun and shade, I think you’ll find its growth more vigorous in a sunny spot.

And when the blossoms are finished, the best is yet to come - the seedheads are spectacular!  In fact, many gardeners grow this great vine for the seedheads alone.  They start out a delicious colour of pale green and then stay a warm tan colour throughout the winter.

So if you are looking for that rare perennial vine to provide colour and interest for three seasons - look no further than Clematis tangutica.
